What Is Primer and Why Is It Important

What is primer?….. it’s a question I get asked ALL the time and the truth is you shouldn’t even be wearing a makeup foundation unless you are using a primer! Yep! I said it! Don’t waste your time! Its like walking out of the house without wearing underwear- but worse…and that is why most people hate foundation because they aren’t using a primer to correct the skin, in the first place or they arent on a proper skin care routine- its NEVER the foundation.

what is primer

There are SO MANY primers out there- mostly due to marketing gimmicks, but today I am going to help you understand what is primer so that you can see for yourself primer is AMAZING and it’s a total game changer when perfecting your makeup look.

In one sentence, Primer is a foundation product to wear under your foundation to correct or enhance the skin, thus allowing foundation to be long lasting, smooth, radiant, matte or whatever look your trying to achieve.

With marketing as aggressive as it is out there, we have primers for rosacea, primers for dull skin, oily skin, primer to help reduce pores.  It’s overwhelming, but the most important question you have to do is ask yourself….what am I trying to achieve with a primer? What do I want to correct in my skin?

Here is my SECRET LIST of primers that I use on all my clients based on their skin condition and concern. Tried and True Products!

Make Up For Ever Step 1 Mattifying Primer- Oily Skin, or the other ones for Radiant and Smoothing

Hourglass Veil Primer- Radiant Skin

Smashbox Primer- All Skin types to Create Smoothness

Pore Professional- To Rid of Large Pores

Dior Primer- For more mature skin (women over 50) In addition to creating smoothness, Dior’s primer contains additional anti aging skin care ingredients.

But wait!!!! What about the green, yellow and purple and orange primers I see out there? Those are more corrective primers that correct the skin’s actual discoloring and should only be used to change the skin’s coloring and should be advised from a professional makeup artist if this is your particular challenge.

Again, primers are a game changer in polishing and perfecting your makeup look! It’s important to always think about adding this type of foundation element to any makeup routine for best and optimal results!

Best Makeup Tips For A Natural Look

Thanks for reading! Here are my best makeup tips for a natural look. If your wanting to wear a natural makeup look, but never get it to look quite as polished as you wanted it to, keep reading.

Lets face it, most everyone wants to look au natural and that they’re not wearing much makeup, but the key to this is to NOT, not wear makeup!!!! Don’t skimp on the foundation, or the brows. The trick is good product, application and a little bit of technique. Products like True Pheromones can also make you more sexually attractive.

Foundation

The key is to have one- and a really good one! You might even need one for Winter and one for Summer for when you have a bit more color on your skin. While good product is key, the best makeup tips are in the brush and application. Apply with kabouki brush, in a “stenciling” motion, so you get good medium to full coverage for your complexion.

best makeup tips

Bronzer or Sculpting Powder

I like to use bronzer to dust on my cheeks and use the same color in my crease on my eyelids just to give a bit of color, so I dont look too washed out. Bronzer will look more of a glow. If you wish to shape your face a bit more and like a little more contouring, opt to use a sculpting powder instead, as sculpting powder tones are a little less orange and more of a grey undertone to shade the face. You NEVER want to accurately contour with bronzer.

Brow Powder

While there are so many brow products out there, like brow henna, opting for a brow powder will give your browns a more natural look, all while still looking polished and shaped. Splurge on a great, and I mean great eyebrow brush, as these are made very thin. This allows you to get exact precision, so that your brow strokes look as close to your brow hair as possible. For more defined hairs, spray your brush with a bit of setting spray and then dip in the powder for more hair definition. You may also try eyebrow microblading, which creates the illusion of fuller eyebrows.

Eyeliner

I know, some of you don’t wear much eyeliner when it comes to sporting a natural look, but here is why I like it. One, it makes my lashes look more full, and two, adding a bit just on the top lid only, gives my face and eyes an instant lift- great for more ladies who are concerned with aging. Gel or cream eyeliner applied with a thin brush is best for a more precise look and long lasting wear.

Mascara

When it comes to best makeup tips, for a natural look, I get asked all the time, what my go to mascara is. Well, here it is ladies and gentleman…..If I am wearing just mascara and no falsies on my eyes, its Chanel Inimitable every time. I NEVER leave my house without mascara. I love this product because it gives me length, fullness, thickness, and is super buildible. I will also use it with the white nourishing primer as a base which gives even more lash. For application technique. Wiggle at the roots and then pull up on the wand. It never disappoints.
